Born Alfredo Molina on May 24, 1953, in Paddington, London, to parents who were immigrants from Spain and Italy, he cultivated a passion for acting early on, inspired by the film Spartacus when he was just nine years old.
He received his training at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and subsequently became a member of the National Youth Theatre. At the age of 21, he took on the stage name Alfred Molina upon the recommendation of his first agent.
